The mutiny of the HMAV Bounty in 1789 must undoubtedly be the most famous mutiny ever to occur on the high seas. Set in the romantic South Pacific, the voyage of the Bounty was set up to collect breadfruit plants from the exotic island of Tahiti for transportation to the slave plantations of the West Indies. This turbulent voyage came to an abrupt end with a sudden mutiny and the setting adrift of Captain Bligh and eighteen fellow crew members in a small open boat, left to their own devices and destiny.
The subsequent voyage in this open boat of some 3,600 miles to safety in the then Dutch East Indies island of Timor is generally regarded as one of the most brilliant feats of seamanship ever undertaken under extreme conditions. The mutineers eventual attempt to find an isolated safe haven to escape the possible long arm of the law and certain death by hanging, led them to the tiny island of Pitcairn, isolated in the vast expanse of the South Pacific. The descendents of the mutineers still live on Pitcairn to this day.
Hundreds of books have been published, several major films have been produced and countless philatelic items issued to cover this fascinating story of romance and intrigue.
The Pitcairn Islands Study Group of the UK devotes itself to the study and history of the Pitcairn Islands, its people, and the mutiny. Whether your interest be philately, of which there is much, books, postcards or just general historical interest on the subject then you will be rewarded by becoming a member of this friendly and informative group.
The Group meets twice a year in London for a day of varied programmes, including guest speakers, film and video shows, displays from members collections and an extremely popular live auction of Pitcairn and Bounty related material. More importantly the meetings offer an opportunity for members to share information and enjoy a day with fellow Pitcairn and Bounty enthusiasts.
The award winning journal the UK Log is one of the Group’s greatest assets, and is published twice yearly. It contains a wealth of information including historical topics, current news and events of the island, philatelic items with new stamp issues and general Group news.
In addition to the UK Group, members can also consider joining the worldwide Pitcairn Island Study Group to which the UK group is affiliated and which was formed in the United States. It also produces its own quarterly magazine the Pitcairn Log.
